Finally stopped being a tent-only snob after one rainy trip to Big Bend

I used to swear by my cheap Coleman tent and thought hammock campers were just trying to be different. Then I got stuck in a 3 day downpour at Big Bend National Park last March and my whole site turned into a mud pit. A guy next to me let me sit in his Warbonnet Blackbird for 20 minutes and I realized how dry and comfy it was. Anyone else make a full switch to hammocks after a bad weather trip or am I just late to the party?

I mean, nobody's talking about how much heavier a decent hammock setup gets compared to a basic tent...

Hammocks work great for certain places, but Big Bend is one of those spots where a hammock is basically useless most of the year. No trees in the desert unless you're up in the Chisos and even then it's limited. That guy you met was lucky to find a good setup there. I've been tent camping for twenty years and never had a problem with rain because I actually set up properly with a tarp and a good footprint. Different gear works for different conditions, hammocks aren't some universal upgrade.
