Unpopular opinion: I think people are way too quick to replace a shutter mechanism these days.
I've seen at least three jobs this month where the issue was just a tiny bit of old, sticky grease on the timing gear. A careful clean with Ronsonol and a re-lube fixed it for good. Does anyone else miss the days when we'd diagnose the simple stuff first?

Honestly, I have to disagree. Time is money, and a new shutter unit is a known fix. Last week I had a Contax where the old grease had turned to glue and actually wore down a plastic gear post during its sticky phase. Cleaning it just left me with a wobbly gear. A full replacement saved hours of guesswork and got the camera back to the customer faster. Sometimes the simple fix just kicks the problem down the road.

Ever try fixing an old radio where the capacitors just crumble when you touch them? Feels like some gear just hits a point where no amount of cleaning brings it back.
