Had a weird shutter curtain jam on a Pentax K1000 last Friday
It was a camera I got from a yard sale in Tucson, looked clean but the second curtain just stuck halfway. I spent like two hours trying to see if it was a gear or just old grease. Ended up being a tiny piece of foam seal that had turned to goo and glued itself to the rail. Anyone know a good solvent for that old black foam that won't hurt the metal?

Man, I have to disagree on using any solvent. That stuff can creep into places you don't want and leave a residue. I've fixed a few of these and the best way is careful mechanical removal. Use a wooden toothpick to gently scrape the bulk of it off. For the last sticky bits, a tiny bit of isopropyl alcohol on a q-tip, but you have to be super careful. The metal is fine but you don't want any alcohol getting on other parts.

Yeah, the wooden toothpick trick is solid. I've had good luck with a plastic spudger too, the kind for phone repair. The key is going slow and angling it to push the gunk off, not dig into the surface. A tiny drop of Goo Gone on a paper towel, dabbed on the sticky part only, works if it's really baked on, but you gotta wipe it clean fast.
