A retired photog's shutter count advice actually worked

Last month I told someone to replace the shutter on an old Canon F-1 because the speeds looked off. He said 'check the magnet first, cheap fix.' I ignored him for 2 days, then finally pulled the magnet and cleaned it. That was it, no replacement needed, saved the guy $140 and I felt dumb. Anyone else ever get schooled by a pro who knew a simpler route?

Buddy of mine had the same thing with an old Nikon F2, spent a week rebuilding the whole advance mechanism. His uncle, a guy who shot for newspapers back in the 70s, just wiggled the rewind button and it clicked back into place. Cost him nothing but twenty minutes of feeling like an idiot.
