Visited a custom shop in Nashville last week
Saw a guy using a 1950s shaper with no guard. He said he's been doing it that way for 30 years. Am I being too cautious or is that just how old timers roll?

You bet, 'just how old timers roll' - I watched my grandpa run a tablesaw without a guard for 40 years, scary but true.
