My old boss in Dayton told me to never glue up a face frame without checking the diagonals twice, and I ignored him for 2 years
I worked in a cabinet shop off Third Street in Dayton for about 4 years. The owner, Ray, was maybe 70 and had been building cabinets since he was a teenager. Every time I'd glue up a face frame he'd walk by and say the same thing: check the diagonals twice before the clamps go on, because the glue doesn't care if you're in a hurry.
I figured it was just old guy stuff. I was fast and my frames looked fine going into the clamps. Then about 2 years in I built a run of 6 upper cabinets for a kitchen remodel in Oakwood. Got them all glued up, went to install, and the doors wouldn't sit right on 4 of them. The frames were racked about 3/16 out of square. Took me a full Saturday to cut them apart and redo them, unpaid.
Ray never said I told you so. He just handed me his old wood folding rule and said the diagonal check takes 8 seconds. He wasn't wrong.
Now I check twice, every time. What's the one thing an old timer told you that you had to learn the hard way before you believed it?
