Question about budgeting when unexpected expenses pop up
I spent 3 months building a solid monthly budget and had $200 set aside for emergencies, but then my car needed a $600 brake job last week. Took me 5 hours to figure out how to move money from my vacation fund to cover it without messing up my savings goals. How do you guys handle big surprise costs that throw your whole month off?

Your emergency fund is way too small if $200 is all you set aside. The rule of thumb is 3-6 months of expenses, not a couple hundred bucks for minor stuff. Car repairs like that are pretty predictable too (they always happen eventually) so you should have a separate sinking fund just for vehicle maintenance. Keep putting money into that vacation fund, but also build up a real emergency cushion before life throws another surprise at you.

3-6 months of expenses" is kinda overkill for most people unless you're living paycheck to paycheck with no backup. Not everyone needs a fat emergency fund for a car repair that costs less than a cheap rent payment. I mean yeah, $200 is low, but $600 is not that huge of a deal either if you have savings elsewhere like your vacation fund. Seems like you handled it fine without losing your mind over it. Life's gonna throw curveballs no matter how much you plan, so stressing over a perfect emergency fund is just another way to make yourself miserable.
