I saved $40 last month by fixing my own dryer

My dryer stopped heating last Tuesday, and I almost called a repair person right away. I looked up a video online and found it was just a broken thermal fuse, a $12 part from the hardware store. I had it fixed in twenty minutes, which saved me the $50 service call fee I was ready to pay. Has anyone else had a small fix turn into a big win for their home budget?

Totally get that feeling. I fixed my own dishwasher last year when it just stopped draining. Watched a video and saw it was a clogged filter and a worn out drain hose. The parts were maybe thirty bucks total and an hour of my time. A repair quote would have been over two hundred. It makes you want to check YouTube for everything that breaks now.

Right? After that first YouTube fix, you start seeing repair bills as a personal insult. My coffee maker starts acting up and I'm immediately on the floor with a screwdriver, convinced I'm a certified appliance tech because I watched a seven minute video. Saved two hundred on the dishwasher, then spent fifty on a weird tool I used once.

Saw a stat that over half of DIY appliance repairs now start with a video. My brother tried to fix his dryer with a tutorial. Ended up needing a whole new drum after he took it apart.
