A bulk rice purchase fiasco that taught me a harsh lesson
I mean, I grabbed a giant sack of rice thinking it was the ultimate budget staple, but idk, maybe it's just me but I didn't store it properly. Honestly, within a week, weevils got into it and I had to toss the whole thing, which was such a waste of money. I had to scramble to find alternatives for meals, and it stressed me out more than I expected. So, warning: if you're buying in bulk, make sure you have airtight containers ready or you might regret it like I did.

What, weevils in just a week? That’s honestly terrifying how fast they took over! The thought of opening that sack and seeing the rice actually moving is my nightmare. Airtight containers are definitely getting moved to the top of my shopping list now.

Did you know weevil eggs can survive processing and just wait for the right humidity to hatch? I read a piece from a pest control site that said a single female can lay hundreds of eggs, and they can go from egg to adult in as little as a month, but in warm conditions, it's way faster. That's why seeing movement in a week isn't surprising if your kitchen is warm. Airtight containers help, but freezing the rice for a few days after buying it can kill any eggs. It's gross, but at least it's a solvable problem with some basic precautions.

Consider how the weevils change the actual texture of the rice before you even see them. It gets this weird gritty feel, almost like fine sand mixed in. Ruins the whole mouthfeel of a dish even if you pick the bugs out.
