Just finished a week laying reclaimed brick for a patio in Savannah and it was the most satisfying job in years.

The homeowner gave us total freedom on the herringbone pattern and the weather was perfect, not a single rain delay. Has anyone else had a project lately where everything just clicked like that?

Man, I have to disagree. My last patio job was a nightmare. The bricks were all different thicknesses, so leveling was impossible. The homeowner changed the pattern three times after we started. We even had to tear out a whole section because their dog kept running through the wet mortar. Some jobs just fight you every step of the way.

That dog story is brutal.

...that's the dream right there, when the weather holds and the client just trusts your eye. I did a small brick walkway last fall with a basket weave pattern and it was the same kind of smooth sailing. The key for me was spending a full day just sorting the bricks by thickness before I even laid the first one... saved a ton of hassle with leveling later. Made the whole thing feel like a puzzle that just fit together.
