Mushroom foraging kit was a total money pit for me

I spent $180 on a fancy basket, field guides, and a spore kit back in March thinking I'd become a weekend forager near Portland. Turns out I only found three edible chanterelles in 4 months, and one of those made me feel sick for a whole afternoon. The books were too scientific, the basket scratched my back, and the spore kit just grew mold on my kitchen counter. I could have just asked my neighbor who picks mushrooms for free, but no, I had to buy everything first. Anyone else sink cash into a hobby before realizing the free version was better? How do you test a hobby cheaply before going all in? I'm thinking of selling the basket for $40 just to get something back.

Oh man, I feel this in my bones lol. Last year I dropped like $120 on a fancy sourdough starter kit, complete with a proofing basket and thermometer, and my bread came out looking like a sad hockey puck every single time. My neighbor finally told me she just uses flour, water, and a regular bowl from her kitchen, and now her loaves are gorgeous. I ended up donating the whole kit to a thrift store and felt both relieved and ridiculous. The real trick is to borrow or cheap out first, then upgrade only if you actually stick with it past the honeymoon phase. You'll probably get more joy selling that basket to another optimist than you ever did hauling it through the woods.

So what made you finally give the neighbor's method a shot after you spent all that money? I am curious because most people I know double down on the fancy stuff out of pride, like they need to justify the purchase somehow. And did you feel a little annoyed at yourself for not just asking her in the first place, before you bought the kit? I have seen so many people get caught in that same trap, where they think spending more means they are more serious about the hobby. It is funny how the simplest answer is usually right there in front of you the whole time. I would bet a lot of folks reading this are nodding their heads because they have a drawer full of unused gadgets that sounded great at the store.
