That $35 streaming box I bought to replace my smart TV apps, best or worst call?

So my 2019 Samsung finally started lagging so bad on Netflix and Hulu that I threw $35 at a Walmart ONN box last month. On one hand, it loads everything in like 2 seconds and my old remote no longer makes me want to smash it. On the other hand, now I've got two remotes on my coffee table and the box randomly drops wifi once a week, which my TV never did. Anyone else make this swap and regret it or swear by it? Would you have just dealt with the slow apps or paid $100 more for something like a Roku Ultra?

Finally figured out how to eat ruffles without breaking them in the bag

For like 15 years I'd crush half the bag just reaching in for a handful, especially the big family size ones from Costco. Last month I tried pouring them into a bowl mouth-first instead of tilting the bag, and now I get whole chips almost every time. Anyone else got a weird snack trick that took them way too long to stumble onto?

The gas station sushi in Salinas actually converted me

I spent 15 years telling anyone who would listen that gas station sushi was a guaranteed trip to the bathroom. Then last month I was on a job in Salinas and forgot my lunch, so I grabbed a spicy tuna roll out of desperation at a Chevron. It was shockingly fresh, the rice was right, and I didn't get sick at all. Now I'm wondering how many other places I've been unfairly writing off. Has anyone else had a random roadside food win that made them question their old rules?

Didn't know magnesium sulfate could do that to a slab until last Tuesday

I was finishing a driveway in Boise and the mix started going off way faster than normal, like 20 minutes early. I thought it was the heat but the ready mix plant said they'd swapped in a different cement source with higher magnesium sulfate content. I looked it up later and apparently that stuff eats away at cured concrete over time if it's not accounted for in the mix design, it's a real problem out here with the local aggregates. I've poured for 11 years and never once thought about checking the mineral report before a pour. The plant guy said they see it mostly on commercial jobs and just add extra fly ash to protect it. Has anyone else run into this or am I just lucky I never got burned on it before? Maybe I should start asking for the mineral breakdown on every order now, or is that overkill?

Warning: my band saw blade lost its edge overnight and I caught it just in time

I was slicing through a pork shoulder Thursday and noticed the cut felt rougher than usual. Thought it was just the fat. Next morning I go to do the same job and the blade is tearing instead of cutting, leaving shreds all over. Turns out the blade tension had loosened up and I'd been running it crooked for about 3 days. That wore the teeth down uneven on one side. I checked after every sharpening before, but never checked tension during the week. Got a new blade in and it's night and day, like cutting butter again. Has anyone else had tension sneak up on them that fast, or do I just got bad luck with cheap blades?

The $20 tarp that outlasted my $140 tent footprint

I used to think tent footprints were a scam, so I bought this cheap blue tarp from a hardware store in Flagstaff and cut it to size. After 40 nights across rocky sites in Arizona and Utah, the tarp has zero tears while my friend's name-brand footprint shredded on the second camping trip. The tarp also doubles as a rain cover for my gear when I'm cooking. So who's actually right here: the gear companies pushing fancy footprints, or the DIY tarp crowd?

The $200 espresso grinder that made me ditch my $35 coffee shop habit

I spent 4 months buying a $6 latte every weekday near my office in Portland. That's about $480 total. I got a cheap hand grinder and a used Aeropress for $35, thinking I'd just drink the same coffee at my desk. But the grinder was SO inconsistent, every cup tasted like a gamble. Last week I finally dropped $190 on a decent burr grinder and it hit me. The coffee shop wasn't ripping me off, they were selling consistency. I could have bought this grinder after 2 weeks and saved $400. Anyone else waste cash on the cheap route first before getting the real thing?

My uncle's 'read the credits first' advice saved me from a huge spoiler last week

So my uncle who's been collecting since the 80s told me years ago to always flip to the back of a new issue and check the credits before reading. I always thought that was super weird. But last week I grabbed issue #47 of a series I'm binging and there was a new artist listed it said 'special guest appearance by' on the splash page. I almost flipped back to the start but I didn't. So if I'd started reading I would've seen that guest before the story revealed it. That would've ruined the whole payoff. Anyone else got weird habits from older collectors that actually work out? What's yours?

I finally stopped over-painting after seeing a mentor's layers in Portland

I used to spend 6 hours on one character trying to make every stroke perfect. Then a local artist showed me her Sketchbook file with 40 layers, each one just a rough pass, and it clicked that blocking in ugly shapes builds better form than fussing early. Now I force myself to keep the first 15 minutes messy, and my final renders look way cleaner. Anyone else dump detail work until the color pass?
