Took me 3 weeks to figure out why my monstera's new leaves kept coming in small
Honestly I checked light, water, humidity, fertilizer, everything, and the leaves kept coming in half the size of the old ones. Turned out my pot was way too big for the root ball, so the soil stayed wet down deep and the roots were basically suffocating the whole time. Ngl I felt pretty dumb when I finally pulled it out and saw the roots, has anyone else run into this with a pot that was too roomy?
The pot size thing gets you in a sneaky way too, because a big pot of soil holds way more water than the plant can drink up. I did the same thing with a pothos in a 10 inch pot when the roots barely filled a 4 inch one, and the top inch would feel dry so I kept watering, but two inches down it was straight mud. The roots that were actually there got soft and brown and the plant just sat there doing nothing for months. Now I go by root ball size instead of what looks nice, like an inch or two of room around the roots max, and honestly my plants grow faster in smaller pots. What gets people is that the plant looks fine at first, so you keep waiting for it to settle in, and by the time you check the roots it's already been drowning for weeks.
