The community garden behind the old laundromat had something odd growing

I was walking my dog past the fenced-off lot on 5th Street last Tuesday and noticed a weird purple vine climbing up a dead oak. Has anyone else seen a plant that looks like a cross between morning glory and poison ivy popping up in neglected urban spots?

That purple vine sounds like something I've pulled out of a few neglected lots around town, your mileage may vary but I'd bet it's called "wild climbing nightshade" or something close to it. It popped up behind the old garage on Elm a couple years back and it spread like crazy, taking over a whole chainlink fence in one season. Best bet is to glove up and dig out the roots deep, because if you just clip the top it'll come back twice as thick. Also watch your dog around it, some people say the berries can make animals sick if they eat enough.

My neighbor's dog actually ate a couple of those berries last spring, totally my fault for not keeping him leashed near the lot, and he was fine but threw up all over my rug (thanks, pup). @logan632 nailed it with the wild climbing nightshade ID, I dug some out from behind my shed and it came back within two weeks like it was mocking me. Guess I'm just living proof that ignoring invasive plants is a bad plan, ha.
