Picked paste over PVA for a rebinding job and kinda regret it

Decided to try wheat paste on a vintage novel from 1931. The spine cracked open after three days and the pages shifted about an eighth of an inch. Anyone else have paste jobs go sideways on old paper?

Oh man, I feel your pain with this one big time lol. Tried wheat paste on a 1920s poetry collection last year and the whole spine basically turned into a sad accordion within a week. The pages got all wavy and never dried flat no matter what I did. Learned my lesson the hard way that old paper just doesn't like moisture like that. PVA all the way for vintage stuff now for sure.

Honestly @keithbennett I think people make too big a deal about wheat paste and old paper. Yeah it adds moisture but so does PVA if you slather it on thick enough. I've used wheat paste on stuff from the 1800s and it came out fine as long as I let it dry slow.
