Paid $40 for the audiobook of Dune thinking it would get me through my commute, and I want those 4 hours back
So I finally caved and bought the Dune audiobook for like $40 because everyone keeps saying the movie is amazing and I wanted to read it before I watch it. Big mistake. The narration has this full cast thing going on and some of the voices are so weird that I keep losing track of who is even talking. I made it about 4 hours in and I had no clue what was happening with any of the politics or the spice or whatever. My commute is 35 minutes each way so I figured a 21 hour book would last me a few weeks, but I ended up switching to a podcast about sandwiches instead. Now I'm sitting here wondering if I should just watch the movie first and skip the book entirely, which feels like breaking some kind of rule. Has anyone else had an adaptation situation where the book was just too hard to get through and the movie ended up being the easier way in?
I feel like this happens with so many "classic" books honestly. Like everyone says you HAVE to read the book first but then you try and it's a total slog, and the movie is right there being way easier to follow. Same thing happened to me with Lord of the Rings, I tried the books like three times and could not get past the first hundred pages, then watched the movies and loved them, and suddenly the books made way more sense. I don't think it's breaking a rule to go movie first, it's more like a trailer for the book. Some stories just work better on screen, or at least they work better for certain brains.
