I used to think the Harry Potter movies were perfect until I reread the books last month.

Now I'm annoyed they cut out Peeves the poltergeist and most of the Marauders' backstory, so which adaptation do you think actually improved on the book?

Agree completely about the missing book details. For me, the film version of The Two Towers actually tightened up the middle of the story in a good way. Giving Arwen a bigger role at that point connected the romance better, and the pacing felt more urgent than some long stretches in the book. It made the emotional hits land harder.

Used to think the books were always better, but you and ryan might be onto something here. The Arwen stuff did make those parts hit different for me too.

The movie for The Princess Bride is way better than the book. The book has this whole boring frame story about the author's home life that just kills the fun. Cutting that out was a genius move, it gets right to the good stuff. It's a perfect example of a movie fixing a book's mistakes. I saw @cora177 mentioned Lord of the Rings, and that's another good one where changes helped. Some things just work better when you see them on screen.
