Maybe the movie's sound design is what really gets you, the silence between the words.

That's a good point, but I always notice the floorboards. In a quiet scene, you hear a character shift their weight and the wood creaks. That tiny sound tells you they're nervous or hiding something. It builds the whole world without a single line of dialogue. The silence lets those small truths come through.
