My sister said our book club picks are too safe and it got me thinking

We were picking next month's book and I suggested another popular thriller. She just looked at me and said, 'We only read stuff everyone already likes. Where's the fun in that?' I mean, she's right. Last year, 9 out of 12 books were bestsellers. It hit different because she wasn't being mean, she just wanted us to actually debate something. Has your group ever gotten stuck in a reading rut?

Yeah, that "stuck in a reading rut" feeling is so real. My group hit a wall where every pick felt predictable. What broke it was letting the person who hated the last book choose the next one. It forced us out of our comfort zone and the talks got way more lively, just like your sister wants. We ended up reading some weird stuff that we all loved arguing about.

That rule about the person who hated the last book choosing is genius. My friend's group did something like that and read a book about mushroom foraging that got super heated.

Wait, what made the mushroom book so heated? Was it just bad info or did people take sides on edible vs poisonous?
