Visited a fab shop in Erie and it changed my mind about preheating

Stopped by a buddy's shop outside Erie last month to borrow a beveling machine. He had a crew preheating every single joint before welding, even the small stuff I always skip. I told him it seemed like overkill, then he showed me a crack from a cold weld that failed during a pressure test at 900 psi. Watching them stick to the procedure for every pass made me rethink my whole approach... now I carry a temp stick in my truck and use it on anything thicker than 3/4 inch. Has anyone else flipped on a basic step after seeing it done right somewhere else?

900 psi blowout from a skipped preheat would make me change my whole routine too.
