I finally tried my old foreman's trick of preheating before tack welds, and I owe him an apology
Back when I was a second year apprentice in Gary, Indiana, my foreman Ray kept telling me to run a torch over the joint before tacking anything thicker than half inch. I figured he was just old school and wasting my time, so I kept tacking cold for about 6 months. Then we got a batch of 3/4 inch plate and every tack I laid popped loose on the roll, cost us almost 4 hours of rework. Ray didn't even say anything, just handed me the torch and walked off. Curious if anyone else picked up habits like that from an old timer they didn't appreciate until later.
