Am I the only one who still rolls a tube the way a 30 year man in Gary showed me?
Back in 2014 an old boilermaker in Gary told me to always roll a tube in one steady pull and never stop halfway, and I brushed it off as just his way of doing things. Last month I rushed a job and stopped mid roll on 6 tubes, and every one of them leaked on hydro, so I had to cut them all out and redo the whole pass. Does anyone else have a trick like that from an old timer that you ignored at first but now swear by?
Any old timer who tells you a steady pull is the only way has probably never rolled a 2 inch tube in a tight spot where you just can't get the angle for one clean motion. Stopping mid roll didn't ruin your tubes by itself, what ruined them was letting the tube sit there and cool down while the roller was still in it. Do one full pass without pausing if you can, but if you have to break, back the roller off and start the pull over instead of parking it halfway.
