Spent 6 hours trying to get a forge weld to stick last night

I was working on a small railroad spike knife and could not get the weld to take no matter what I tried. Turned out I was rushing the heat and not letting the billet soak long enough in the fire. Anybody else have a simple mistake that cost them a whole evening?

Everyone blames the steel but nobody admits to their fire being too cold.

Learned that lesson the hard way too, now I always let the steel sit until it's an even orange all through.
