I stopped by a community forge in Asheville a couple weeks ago and the guy running it lets anyone pay $15 an hour to use the coal forges and anvils. Half the regulars there think it's great because it gets new people into the craft without dropping $2,000 on a setup, but two older smiths pulled me aside and claimed the low price means nobody learns to care for their own tools or coal. One of them pointed at a kid leaving a fire burning and said that never would have happened when lessons cost real money. I get both sides but I keep going back and forth on which one wins. What would you charge if you ran something like that?
