Stripped a derailleur hanger bolt on a 2019 Trek, learn from my mess

Last Tuesday I was adjusting a customer's rear derailleur and snugged the hanger bolt like I always do. That little bolt went from fine to stripped in half a turn. Turns out the frame was aluminum and the bolt was steel, and it had been cross threaded by someone before me. I spent 45 minutes with a screw extractor and a lot of bad words before I got it out. Lesson learned: I now check the threads on every used bike before I touch the derailleur. Has anyone else found hidden thread damage on a used bike that bit you later?
