PSA: My toilet flange repair turned into a 3 day bathroom flood

I went to swap out the wax ring on my toilet last Saturday and when I pulled the old one off, the flange cracked in half. I live in a 1950s house in Portland and the floor under it was so rotted that my foot went through when I stepped back. Has anyone else opened up a small fix and found a way bigger mess under it?

Flange cracking is usually from the toilet rocking, not just age, so check for a loose fit too.
