I finally measured my stair treads before buying that $45 retrofit kit
Turns out my 1970s stairs in Columbus have treads a full inch deeper than standard, so the kit barely covered half of each step. Has anyone else dealt with non-standard stair sizes, or should I just cut my own from plywood next time?

Damn, that's a rough find after you already dropped $45. Did you actually try installing them anyway, or did you stop when you saw the gap? I'm curious if the kit came with any kind of filler pieces or if the manufacturer has a custom option that would've worked better. Cutting plywood sounds doable, but you gotta think about the nosing and whether you can match the angle right. What's the actual overhang situation on those treads?
