Had to pick between a garlic press and a microplane for 6 months of meal prep
I was setting up my tiny kitchen in Portland and only had drawer space for one. I went with the microplane because I read it does more, but honestly after grating garlic every Sunday for my meal prep, I got so tired of shredding my knuckles. Last week I got a cheap garlic press for $7 at the hardware store and it takes me like 10 seconds per bulb. The microplane is still good for ginger or cheese, but for garlic alone the press wins. Has anyone else ditched the fancy tool for the basic one after sticking it out for months?

okay so the microplane wins for lemon zest and parmesan in my book, but for garlic? nah. i burned my fingertips so many times trying to hold that last little clove. the press is ugly and takes up the same space anyway. honestly i just chuck the whole peeled clove in there and squeeze, zero fuss. you made the right call switching, the fancy tool can stay for the fancy stuff.

Microplane plus a $7 press covers all bases, but @luna_craig58 nails it, chuck the whole clove and save your knuckles.
