Unpopular opinion: sourdough starter hoarding is killing new bakers
My sister texted me 11 photos of her new starter last Tuesday and I nearly blocked her. She spends 20 minutes a day feeding it, naming it, and posting about it, while I baked 4 loaves this week from a $2 packet of yeast. Here is the debate: is keeping a starter a real skill or just a hobby that makes people feel like bakers without baking much? I get the flavor thing, I do, but I also think new folks quit after week 2 when the jar smells like acetone and nothing rises. So which camp are you in, team jar or team packet, and did your starter ever actually beat a good overnight poolish?
My aunt got so into her starter she named it after her ex husband and yelled at it when it didnt rise. Lasted about a month before it went in the trash and she went back to buying the frozen dough balls from the store. Some folks just need a hobby that comes with a jar I guess.
