Thought I killed my sourdough starter last Tuesday, but a 30 minute fix in my cold oven brought it back
I keep my starter in a mason jar on the counter and feed it every morning before work, but last Tuesday I overslept and rushed out the door without feeding it. Then I got hit with two back to back night shifts, so that poor jar sat there untouched for almost 4 days. When I finally opened it there was this dark gray liquid pooled on top and the whole thing smelled like nail polish, so I figured it was done for and started googling where to buy a new starter. Before I tossed it I poured off the liquid, scooped out the top layer, and took just a spoonful from the middle that still looked bubbly. I mixed that spoonful with 100 grams of flour and warm tap water, stuck the jar in my oven with just the light on, and left it alone. Two hours later it was doubling and smelled like yogurt again, and by the next morning it was back to rising like nothing happened. The light bulb in an oven sits around 90 degrees, which is pretty much a proofing box for free. Has anyone else brought a starter back from the dead like this, or do you just start a fresh one when it goes south?
