Thought cake strips were internet nonsense until my 8 inch layers came out flat in Denver
Bought a $6 pack last month after 3 years of trimming dome tops with a serrated knife, and now I'm wondering if anyone else resisted them for way too long or if it's just me who got stubborn about it.
Honestly the trimming builds character and you get free snacks from the scraps, so I'm not sold on fixing what wasn't broke. Plus now you gotta soak those things and wash them every single time, which sounds like more work than one knife pass.
The soaking part is like 30 seconds though, you just drop them in water before you start mixing and forget about them. One knife pass sounds easy until you're doing it on four layers and your crumb coat looks like a ski slope on the sides. Flat tops also stack and hold filling way better, so the cake itself comes out cleaner. I'll take the tiny bit of extra cleanup for that trade.
