My neighbor's comment about his fire pit made me rethink my whole patio setup
I was chatting with my neighbor, Dave, last weekend while he was just sitting by his simple, small fire pit. He said, 'Honestly, I use this $80 thing more than my whole grill station.' It hit me because I spent all last summer building a fancy stone patio area with a built-in grill I barely touch. His point was that the simple, cozy spot where you actually hang out matters more than the big project. Anyone else find they use one simple backyard feature way more than the fancier stuff?

So @the_miles, what's the fanciest thing you own that just collects dust?

Forget the showpiece, build the hangout spot.

Build the hangout spot" is exactly right. I used to save up for the perfect couch no one could sit on, you know? But @barnes.mary has a point. My friend just put a beat-up old picnic table in his backyard with some string lights. It's not fancy, but now people are over all the time. That table gets more use than my whole living room. Makes you wonder why we try so hard to make things look perfect instead of just making them work for real life.
