Started pre-trip river crossing checks after a scare

I used to assume rivers would be easy to cross. Now I look up recent water levels and scout alternatives. It turned a potential problem into a smooth hike last month.

Yeah, that scare was a wake-up call for me too. I read a story online about a group that got stuck because they didn't check the riverbed. Now I always look for rocks or logs underwater that could trip you up. Testing the current with a stick is a good idea, I do that to see how strong it is. Also, I heard from a seasoned hiker to cross at a wide spot where the water is slower. Checking recent rain reports is key too, since water levels can change fast.

Man, that's smart. What was the scare that made you change your routine? I've had a few close calls where the water was moving way faster than it looked from the bank. Now I'm curious what you check for besides water levels. Like, do you look at the river bottom or test the current with a stick first?

Remember almost losing a boot in what looked like a calm, shallow creek. The bottom was pure silt that just swallowed my foot whole. It taught me that clear water can lie about how solid the ground underneath really is. Now I look for ripples that might mean rocks, and avoid places where the water looks glassy and still over a dark bottom.
