Pro tip: don't trust a free map from a gas station near the trailhead.

I got one for a 3-day loop in the Sawtooths. It was missing a key connector trail, added 5 miles of bushwhacking. What's the most reliable paper map brand you all use?

Honestly, I've had the opposite luck (those free ones saved me a couple times). For paper maps, I just stick with the National Geographic Trails Illustrated ones. They've never let me down.

Wait, so you actually had a good experience with those free visitor center maps? I've always found them to be super outdated or missing key trails. What kind of trips were you doing when they saved you? I'm curious because maybe I'm just hitting the wrong parks.
