My apprentice asked why I still use a timing light, got me thinking

Guy fresh out of trade school watched me set ignition timing on an old Ford 302 last Wednesday and asked why I dont just trust the computer. I told him because this truck doesnt have one, but it got me realizing how much of what I teach is habit instead of logic. Anyone else catch themselves doing something the old way just cause that's how they learned it 20 years ago?

Told my helper the same thing once and he asked if I kept a spare set of points in the glovebox like my grandpa. Kid thinks an OBD scanner is a magic wand. Thing is, I could show him on a laptop but where's the fun in that. Nothing beats watching a timing light flash and knowing the engine is happy. Computers just make things too quiet.
