I thought my buddy was nuts for using a heat gun on a dent, but it actually worked
He was working on a 2018 Civic with a door ding and said he saw a video about using a heat gun and a can of compressed air to pop it out. I was sure he'd wreck the paint. He heated the spot for about 90 seconds, then hit it with the compressed air upside down to freeze it, and the dent just clicked back into place. No filler needed. Has anyone else tried this trick on a modern car panel?

My cousin did that on his old truck's fender last year. He was super careful with the heat gun, and it actually worked pretty well. It's a neat trick if you're brave enough to try it.

@sandragonzalez Did your cousin have to do any prep work on the metal first, like sanding it down? I've seen some videos where they heat the dent and then cool it fast with a compressed air can turned upside down. Makes me wonder if the trick only works on certain types of dents or if the paint got messed up at all. Seems like a real gamble on a vehicle you care about.

Is it even worth the risk though? I mean, that sounds like a great way to mess up your clear coat or cause a weird color change. Maybe it's just me but I'd rather live with a small dent than have a big shiny spot from overheating the paint.
