Pro tip: My neighbor's kid asked me why I never shoot the moon with my DSLR

I was showing him some star shots from my backyard in Boise last Tuesday, and he pointed at the moon and asked why it wasn't in any of them. I told him it's too bright and blows out the shot. He just said, 'So use a faster shutter, like for a really bright light.' I tried it that night with a 1/800 second exposure and a low ISO, and it worked. The craters were clear, not just a white blob. Has anyone else got a simple trick for getting detail on a full moon?

Why not just use a filter?

What if the filter changes the flavor you actually want to keep?
