Update: That plumber's advice about shutoff valves saved my ass
Guy at the supply house in Philly told me to always replace both valves when fixing a leak. Had a call last night where I only swapped one and the other blew an hour later. Flooded a basement in Fishtown. Anyone else get burned ignoring simple advice?

Maybe it's just me but I always swap both now after learning that lesson the hard way too.

Doesn't it seem like the whole "learn it the hard way" thing happens way more often with stuff that seems simple? I swear it's like the universe waits for you to get comfortable before it throws a curveball to remind you why people say "better safe than sorry.
