Unpopular opinion: I thought the 'ask anything' concept was just for weird hypotheticals until my buddy asked how to fix his dishwasher and got a step-by-step guide from a retired appliance repairman.

That convinced me the community's actually useful, not just for random 'what if' stuff. Anyone else have a surprisingly practical answer from here?

Yeah, that's the best part... you think it's all silly jokes, then someone actually knows how to re-grout a shower or fix a leaky faucet. I once asked about a weird noise my car was making, just venting really, and a mechanic described the exact sound and told me which belt to check. Saved me a huge repair bill. It's those little moments that make the place feel real.

But what about when the advice is just plain wrong? I've seen some real bad tips get upvoted to the top because they sounded confident, like telling someone to use the wrong kind of cleaner on their stove top. It feels like a gamble sometimes, you have to sort through a bunch of guesses to find the one person who actually knows what they're talking about.

I totally get what you mean about bad advice getting upvoted, but I gotta gently push back on the stove top cleaner thing for a sec. A lot of those "wrong" tips actually depend on your specific stove type, like if it's glass, ceramic, or enamel. The real gamble is people not checking the manufacturer's manual first, not the advice itself. I mean, yeah, some stuff is obviously bad, like using bleach on a glass cooktop, but most of the time it's just someone sharing what worked for them. Isn't that the whole point of a community, learning from each other's experiences, even if they're not always perfect?
