Question about learning guitar: tabs vs playing by ear, only one actually worked for me
I messed around with guitar tabs for about 8 months and could play songs but had no clue what I was doing when someone asked me to jam. Then my neighbor, who plays in a cover band here in Columbus, told me to put the tabs away and just try to find the notes by ear on a 3 chord song. First couple days it felt impossible, but by day 5 I could pick out the melody to a song I liked without looking anything up. Turns out tabs let me copy stuff, but playing by ear made me actually hear what I was doing. Anyone else find that one approach stuck way better than the other?
