Appreciation post: the $3 egg timer trick that finally got my 9 year old out the door on time
Everyone says you need a fancy routine chart or a reward system to fix morning chaos, and I think that's mostly a waste of money and wall space. My son was missing the bus about three days a week back in January, and I tried a sticker chart, a checklist taped to the fridge, and even one of those apps that dings every five minutes, and none of it stuck past week two. What actually worked was a plain $3 wind up egg timer from the hardware store on Cicero Ave, and I just set it for 15 minutes when he sits down for breakfast. He watches the dial move and somehow that dumb little tick tick tick gets him moving better than anything else. Last week he made the bus all five days and even had time to find his other shoe. Has anyone else had luck with something this low tech, or am I just late to the party on timers?
