Serious question, how do you all keep your embroidery floss from tangling into a bird's nest

Had a buddy who swore by winding each color onto those little cardboard bobbins, and for a while it worked great. Then he got lazy and started tossing the loose skeins in a shoebox together, and within a week it looked like a raccoon had a fight in there. He spent two hours one night picking knots out of a single strand of dark green, cursing the whole time. Finally he dumped the whole box on his kitchen table and just stared at it. Lesson learned, he's back to bobbins now and swears he'll never go back. What are you storing yours in right now?
