Saw a Roman mosaic up close and changed my mind about restoration

I used to think leaving ancient mosaics exactly as found was better than any retouching. But last month at a site in southern France, I saw a before-and-after from the same 2nd century floor. They had filled in just 15 percent of the missing tesserae with neutral stone, not colored copies. The difference was wild - the original patterns popped out way clearer without faking anything. Now I get why the Louvre team did that with their Syria panels last decade. Anyone else come around on partial restoration after seeing it in person?

Pouring new stone into old gaps ruins the honest decay that makes those mosaics feel ancient.

Yeah that actually makes a lot of sense when you put it that way. I used to be in the "fix everything" camp but you changed my mind on this one.
