Finally identified a pottery sherd that had me stumped for 6 months

I pulled this weird little rim piece from a site near the Chattahoochee River last spring. Kept comparing it to every reference in my library and online and nothing matched. Took it to a ceramics workshop at the state museum last weekend and a volunteer there spotted it right away as a late Woodland folded rim. Six months of staring at that thing and a random retiree solved it in 30 seconds. Anybody else have a mystery artifact that took forever to figure out?

Picked the piece up yourself, or was it part of a larger site survey? I'm curious if you noticed anything else in that same layer, like charcoal or fire-cracked rock, that might give the rim some context. Folded rims are tricky because they look almost modern sometimes, especially if the clay is gritty. Did the retiree give any tips on what to look for specifically, or was it just that one shape that clicked for them?

Same thing happened to me with a broken point that took me years to ID!
