Finally got a crown pattern right after 4 tries on a big maple

I've been doing removals for years but was always shaky on crown reductions for shape. Yesterday I had a 60 foot silver maple in Saginaw with a bad co-dominant stem, and instead of just topping it like the last guy did, I mapped out the cuts beforehand. Watched where the weight was pulling and took it back to the strongest laterals, ended up with a balanced canopy that doesn't look like a lollipop. My foreman even said "that's how you're supposed to do it," which felt good. Any tips for reading included bark on older trees, or do you just avoid the risky ones altogether?
