Checked out the old sugar maple at the town park yesterday

I was walking through Riverside Park and noticed this massive sugar maple that must be 80 feet tall. It has a huge cavity near the base but the crown still looks healthy. Anybody seen something like this hold up well long term?

We had a big red oak near my shop with a hollow like that for like 15 years. Thing just kept chugging along until a storm finally took the top out. The cavity actually got bigger over time but the bark around it stayed alive and the leaves up top looked fine every spring. Just keep an eye on it if you notice any cracking or leaning, cause that's when it gets iffy.

Notice how most things can surprise you if you just give them enough time to figure it out.
