My barber in Denver asked if I was okay because I was quiet for 30 seconds.

That's a pretty loaded question from a barber. It makes me wonder what their normal client chatter is like. I've had barbers who expect constant small talk and others who are fine with quiet. Maybe they were genuinely worried, or maybe they just felt awkward. Did you get the sense they were checking on your mood, or were they just trying to fill the silence?

My old barber in Austin had a rule, he'd only ask if the quiet went past two minutes. @luna_craig58 makes a good point about their normal chatter, but sometimes it's about the shop vibe. A silent client can make the whole room feel tense for everyone else waiting. That barber might have been trying to reset the mood for the whole place, not just your cut.
