Showerthought: The week my neighbor's swamp cooler died taught me more about Albuquerque houses than any inspection.
After three days of 100-degree heat watching him patch the old unit with duct tape and a prayer, I finally asked my usual guy for a quote on a new one, and his $4,500 estimate for a proper install made me check my own unit's pads immediately.

Honestly, I used to just ignore that old cooler on my roof. Figured if it wasn't leaking, it was fine. Seeing a neighbor go through that panic in a heatwave, though, that flipped a switch for me. Now I check the pads and the belt every spring, no question.

Oh, that's so true. It's amazing how seeing someone else's bad luck can wake you up. I was the same way until my own unit started making a godawful noise one July. A little care goes a long way with those old swamp coolers. Saves you a lot of sweat and money.

Ha, I don't know about all that... I mean yeah it's a headache when something breaks in the summer but $4,500 for a swamp cooler install sounds like someone trying to take advantage. Those things are simple machines, a motor, some pads, a belt and a water line. You can get a whole new unit for under a grand and install it yourself in an afternoon with basic tools. People act like it's rocket science when really it's just a big fan with wet cardboard. I've had the same cooler running for fifteen years and all I do is swap the pads and oil the motor once a year. Maybe if you're paying someone else to breathe on it everything seems urgent and expensive...
