My kitchen backsplash looked terrible 6 months ago but now it's night and day

I finally got around to redoing the grout on that old tile after putting it off since last summer. The original grout was cracked and dark in spots no matter how much I scrubbed. Anyone else have luck with those grout colorant pens or is redoing it all the only real fix?

Used the pens for a quick fix once. Looked decent for like two months. Then it started peeling off in chunks. Total waste of $15. Ended up scraping it all out and regrouting by hand. The color matched perfectly and it's been solid for over a year now. Grout is cheaper than the pens too.

Tried those pens and they worked okay for a few months but started fading. Redoing it sucks but lasts way longer. You see any improvement with the new grout yet?

Used to think the pens were the easy fix but watching my bathroom grout crumble after six months changed my mind. The new grout is holding up way better so far.
