Soak it in fresh water for a week (changing daily) before you even think about planing.

Maybe it's just me, but I used to think soaking was overkill. This post totally changed my perspective.

Yeah, and this isn't just about driftwood. It's a symptom of how we often skip essential prep work because the consequences aren't immediate. Like when people use untreated pallet wood for furniture, only to have it warp or harbor pests later. Or in machining, where skipping tool maintenance leads to costly replacements. We're so focused on the end product that we ignore the processes that ensure longevity. That salt is a slow disaster, same as neglecting fundamentals in any craft.
